What the research says
The average one-way commute is about 27 minutes in the US (Census ACS) and about 26 minutes in Canada (Statistics Canada). That average has been stable for decades — a pattern known as Marchetti's constant: people budget about an hour a day for travel, and reorganize their lives when a commute pushes past it.
Economists Frey and Stutzer called the tendency to underprice commutes the commuting paradox: people accept long commutes for bigger homes or better pay, but the satisfaction data says a one-hour commute needs roughly 40% more income to break even. Meanwhile super-commuting (90+ minutes each way) is up 32% since the pandemic — hybrid schedules changed the math, and days-per-week is now the biggest variable in whether a long commute makes sense.
